Bloody Mary

I spent the night tucked into Alistair. It was a comfortable place to be, but his warmth and reassuring presence made me feel worse for Lady Mary who was sleeping alone.

The mystery of George’s whereabouts plagued my dreams, waking me with a start several times. Was it his blood we found on the ground outside the warehouse? Where had he been all day? Was he even in the country?

In my dreams, I was scared to look behind me, convinced Justin Metcalf-Howe or some other secret agent would be standing there waiting to scare me.

Fearing I was robbing Alistair of sleep with my fitfulness, I slid out from under his arm just before six in the morning and stole silently across the carpet gathering clothes as I went. Once I had the door open, I beckoned to the two dachshunds eyeing me suspiciously from their bed in the corner of the room.

However, urgent gestures to come with me did nothing to convince them to leave their warm spot and when I grew insistent, they burrowed back under their blanket to vanish once more.

I guess they felt no need to go outside just yet.

Backing out of the door and doing my best to not disturb Alistair as I left him to sleep, I closed the door quietly, turned around, and almost wet myself.

Looking right at me was the damned Ostrich. Quite how a person shares their house with such a giant bird, or any creature of that size, I couldn’t fathom. Its beady eyes were locked on mine, or so I told myself, and my feet were frozen to the spot.

Logic dictated that the bird was most likely friendly – it was allowed to live in the house after all.

‘Hello,’ I tried in a friendly voice. The way I wanted to go was blocked by the bird. I could hug the wall and squeeze by, but my feet didn’t like the way the bird was looking at me and they refused to move when I told them to.

‘Are you going to peck me if I get too close?’ I asked.

Octavia – I remembered her name, turned her head to one side. Now only one beady eyeball stared at me. It was hardly an improvement.

Wondering whether I should just go back inside my room and give it a few minutes before trying again, I convinced my feet to take a step back. Octavia chose that moment to fluff out her feathers, spreading her stubby wings to each side and fluttering them – the Ostrich version of limbering up perhaps.

My stomach tightened as my brain told me the giant bird was about to charge me, but just as I was about to bolt back through my door, the bird turned around and walked away.

I slumped against the door, letting my heartbeat return to something close to its normal pace. Once the stupid big bird was out of sight at the end of the corridor, I blew out a sigh of relief and hurried toward the stairs.
